Since his unique success with Habitat’67 almost fifty years ago, Moshe Safdie has been developing experimental residential concepts in which he combines various high-rise forms with urban gardens and terraces. With two porous twin towers with a total of 509 units, the architect’s firm is now responding to the great demand for middle-class apartments, as well as to the tropical climate of Singapore. The stepped towers each consists of two parallel high-rises connected by three planted, 30-metre-long sky bridges. This alignment allows the flow of fresh air through the whole building, a maximum of daylight and the integration of extensive recreational facilities on the ground. All of the apartments have flexible layouts and at least one private balcony. Similar to Safdie’s legendary Marina Bay Sands in Singapore the top floor features a large swimming pool. Owing to the staggered heights of gardens, terraces, and pathways, residents are given the impression of a vertical village. This linking of the architecture to the surroundings and the city is regarded by Safdie as imperative in view of the urban densification necessary today. The elaborately planted complex with a sports hall, grill areas, pools, and playgrounds provides residences close to nature and ensures a high quality of life. The constant attention to a human aspect, the detailed form language, and the abundant greenery reduce the impression of a lack of scale.
